Who Can Sponsor?

To become a sponsor, you must:

Be a Canadian citizen, a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act, or a permanent resident of Canada.

Be at least 18 years old.

Live in Canada or plan to return to Canada when your relatives immigrate.

Have enough income to support the family members you intend to sponsor, proving you can meet their basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter.

Who Can Be Sponsored?

Eligible relatives include:

Spouses or common-law partners.

Dependent children (including adopted children).

Parents and grandparents, including the Super Visa as an alternative option.

Under certain conditions, you might also sponsor other relatives, such as siblings, nephews, nieces, or grandchildren, if specific criteria are met.

The Application Process

The family sponsorship application process can be intricate, involving several steps to ensure both the sponsor and the sponsored relative meet the eligibility criteria.

Determine Eligibility: Before anything else, assess your eligibility to sponsor and ensure your relative qualifies to be sponsored.

Prepare Documentation: Gather all necessary documents, including proof of relationship, financial stability, and any other required legal paperwork.

Submit the Application: Complete and submit the sponsorship application along with the permanent residence application for your relative(s). It’s crucial to pay attention to detail and ensure all information is accurate and complete.

Wait for Processing: Application processing times vary depending on the relationship to the sponsored person and the country from which they are applying. During this period, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) may request additional documents or an interview.

Arrival in Canada: Once the application is approved, your family member will receive a confirmation of permanent residence (COPR) and can then make travel arrangements to Canada.
